The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton. Milton joined the team in April 2025 after the Cowboys traded a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for him. He was in a competition for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell during the offseason.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which led to Milton's release to make room for Demercado.
In the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed the ball 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer remarked on the potential of both Milton and Howell as backup options, recalling a conversation with Milton that showcased his confidence in his skills. Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulties of mastering the team's complex offensive system.
Milton expressed that he had gained comfort with the Cowboys' offense, noting the importance of understanding the playbook and executing plays correctly. With Milton's exit, the Cowboys' quarterback roster now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton is subject to waivers, and if not claimed, he may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad.
