Texas has halted the approval of new data center connections to the state power grid while regulators conduct an audit of the anticipated consumption from these projects. This decision, issued by Governor Greg Abbott on August 3, impacts areas like Denton through shared electricity supply rather than direct local projects.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is currently tracking over 1,800 projects waiting for connection, which collectively account for more than 474 gigawatts of power. Approximately 90 percent of these requests are from data centers, and the queue has nearly doubled since January, when it stood at 233 gigawatts.

Denton, located about 18 miles west of Frisco, is affected by the growing demand for power as both households and data centers draw from the same grid. The increasing residential growth in Collin and Denton counties adds to the load each year, raising concerns about reliability during peak usage times and the costs associated with expanding transmission infrastructure.

Regulators are tasked with collecting data on various factors, including power demand, water usage, noise, lighting, tax incentives, and ownership. Previous voluntary data requests received minimal responses. While the pause specifically affects grid interconnection, projects that are developing their own power generation can continue without interruption. No timeline has been provided for the completion of the audits.
