The SMU Mustangs have brought in two wide receiver transfers, Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina, to bolster their receiving corps as they prepare for the upcoming season. This addition comes after the team lost its top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who together contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with several key offensive players. Despite this setback, Hale and Smith have shown promising potential during fall camp. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins highlighted Smith's size and ability to make contested catches, while praising Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced a significant knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2024 season but has since regained his explosive playmaking ability at SMU. Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as assets to the team's offensive strategy.
Smith, with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from his time at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style, fitting well with the Mustangs' downfield passing game.
As the team approaches their season opener against Florida State on September 7, they are focusing on building chemistry and solidifying their depth chart. The competitive atmosphere brought by Hale and Smith is expected to enhance the overall performance of the Mustangs' passing game.
