TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a conflict that began after the newspaper's coverage of a locker room incident. This situation arose following a report detailing an altercation that led to the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields.
On September 4, TCU announced the restoration of access, highlighting that constructive discussions helped both sides come to an agreement. The university expressed its respect for the Star-Telegram as an independent news outlet and indicated a desire to progress with the season. Jim Barnes, a representative from TCU, confirmed on social media that reporter Steven Johnson and his team have regained full access.
The initial report, published by Johnson on August 18, discussed rising tensions within the locker room and claimed that coaches failed to address the situation adequately. It also mentioned that Sonny Dykes, the head coach, was not fully informed about the seriousness of the conflicts among players.
The incident that prompted the report occurred on August 13, when sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma alleged that Fields punched him, resulting in a head injury. A TCU staff member reported the matter to campus police the next day.
Fields was arrested on August 30 after turning himself in to the Tarrant County police. He faces charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and was released later that day on a $50,000 bond. During the credential suspension, Johnson covered TCU's season opener against North Carolina from the stands in Dublin, Ireland.
