The tile game Mahjong is experiencing a surge in popularity across southern Denton County, prompting the opening of several new studios and retail spaces in Argyle and Highland Village. These businesses aim to provide welcoming environments for players to gather, learn the rules, and socialize around the centuries-old pastime.
TBK – The Bees Knees Boutique relocated to a larger facility in Argyle in June to expand its Mahjong offerings. Owner Aimee Buckert stated that the studio now features three permanently set up tables and a dedicated retail section for the game. Buckert noted that the space can accommodate more than 28 players simultaneously by adding extra tables.
She described the expansion as the primary focus of the business, emphasizing her goal of connecting women and creating opportunities for community celebration.
Golden Girl Boutique moved into TBK’s previous location and currently sells Mahjong accessories while hosting daily open-play sessions. Owner Krissy Tarwater highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming space for the growing player base.
In Highland Village, The Clover Table held its grand opening in July at the intersection of FM 407 and Highland Village Road. Owner Amanda McDaniel invested in automatic Mahjong tables imported from China to reduce shuffling time. McDaniel explained that these tables allow players to complete 15 or more games in three hours, compared to about eight games with manual shuffling.
The venue also hosts private events such as graduation parties and anniversaries.
