The Guyer defense, featuring a starting front of three seniors committed to major college programs, dominated the matchup against the state-ranked opponent.
Defensive end Logan Lokey recorded two sacks on Melissa's opening drive, forcing a punt that set up Guyer's first touchdown. The defensive line, which includes Khyren Haywood, Darrien Neal, and Zane Rowe, maintained pressure throughout the contest, limiting Melissa to just 88 total yards of offense.
The performance highlighted a significant milestone for the school, which began play in 2006 with a 0-10 record. Since improving to a 1-9 season the following year, the team has not missed the playoffs and has captured two state championships.
Head coach Reed Heim noted the historical significance of reaching the 200-win mark, citing the collective effort of players, coaches, and the community over the years. The team is currently ranked seventh in Class 6A.
On the offensive side, quarterback Carter Morgan completed 21 of 29 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown. He also added a three-yard rushing score, supported by an offensive line that included Cullum Rushing, Collin Winder, Giancarlo Galizzi, Preston Doyle, Ryan Tyler, and Ryan Whitehead. Morgan expressed confidence in the team's preparation and the execution of his receivers and linemen.
The defensive effort was further bolstered by linebackers Tristan Shelton, Drew Dickinson, and Landon De La Garza, who helped restrict Melissa running back Jeremiah Tabor to 76 rushing yards. This was a notable drop from Tabor's 201-yard performance in the previous week's game. Melissa, now 1-1, had previously generated 581 total yards against Pulaski Academy.
