The Fort Worth Star-Telegram described the incident as an aggravated assault involving Fields and an offensive player. Sources indicated that Fields had previously felt targeted by teammates through insults and threats, including being spat on. Despite reaching out to the coaching staff multiple times about escalating tensions, Fields did not receive a response.
Fields, who transferred to TCU from Louisiana Tech this offseason, was anticipated to start at free safety. He was recognized as the Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2025, leading Louisiana Tech with 92 tackles and three interceptions in the previous season.
