BJ Edwards, who played for the SMU Mustangs, has announced his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision allows him an extra year of eligibility, thanks to a five-for-five temporary injunction that applies to the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards previously spent three seasons at SMU after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played just 14 games. During his time in Dallas, he contributed significantly under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield. His standout season was last year, where he participated in 28 games and recorded an average of 12.7 points per game with a shooting percentage of 47.4.
Additionally, he achieved 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, and was recognized for his defensive skills, making the All-Conference defensive team in the ACC.
Despite interest from SMU to keep him, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to enhance their roster after finishing the last season with a 21-16 overall record and a 7-11 record in SEC play, missing out on the NCAA Tournament.
The addition of Edwards is seen as a crucial improvement for the team’s competitiveness in the upcoming winter season.
