The North Texas Irish Festival has announced it will leave its long-time Dallas home to hold its 2027 event in Denton. The festival is scheduled to take place at the North Texas Fairgrounds on March 13 and 14 of next year. This move ends a more than 40-year history at Fair Park, where the event has been held since 1984.

The festival originated in 1983 at Nick Farrelly’s Lounge in Oak Lawn as the First Texas Céilí. It grew into one of the largest Irish festivals in the country, supported by approximately 500 volunteers from the Southwest Celtic Music Association. Organizers stated the relocation allows them to continue their tradition while reaching new audiences.

Sheri Bush, the festival’s entertainment director, said in a press release that Denton’s focus on music and creativity aligns with the event’s values. She expressed excitement about joining the Denton community and welcoming attendees from across Texas and beyond.

Denton officials welcomed the announcement. Mayor Chris Watts said the city is honored to host the festival, noting it reflects Denton’s reputation as a destination for arts and culture. Kristi Criswell, executive director of Discover Denton, stated that welcoming the event marks an exciting new chapter for local tourism.

Public reaction to the news has been mixed. Some Dallas residents expressed disappointment, comparing the move to other major events leaving the city. Others indicated relief that the festival will continue to operate, regardless of its location.

Details regarding the specific programming or financial arrangements for the new venue were not provided in the announcement.
