Denton police are investigating an apparent suicide after a 22-year-old man was found dead Sunday at South Lakes Park, department spokesperson Amy Cunningham said.

Officers were sent to the park at about 6:18 p.m. after a report of an unconscious man. Police and medics found the man with a gunshot wound, and medical personnel determined he had died.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office identified the person as a 22-year-old man. His cause of death remained pending as of Monday evening.

The Denton Police Department said on social media Sunday evening that officers were at South Lakes Park investigating an incident at a pavilion and that the public was not in danger. The department updated the post at 8:54 p.m. to say the area had been cleared.
