Denton’s weekend calendar includes downtown promotions, a theater festival, themed food and pop-culture programming, a library fundraiser and the fifth anniversary celebration for a local matcha and plant shop.
First Friday is scheduled all day Friday on the Square, with the Downtown Denton Foundation coordinating monthly sales, specials and business events. This month’s lineup includes the start of Denton’s Blazin’ Burger Trail, DJs at Barnhart’s Barbershop and at Norman Roscoe, and a tour connected to Denton’s Art Walk of Fame.
Several Friday events are scheduled elsewhere around downtown. Denton Parks & Recreation’s Adapted Rec Tween & Teen Scavenger Hunt starts at noon at Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, 117 W. Hickory St.; teens can participate in teams on the Square for a possible prize, and a guardian must attend with each participant.
Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St., will host the 18-and-up Fall Out Boy tribute drag show and dance party titled Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Drag Show So We Couldn't Get Sued; doors are listed at 7:30, and the show at 8:30 p.m., with costumes encouraged.
Events scheduled across the weekend include The Gay Agenda: A Sundown Short Works Festival at Theatre Denton Annex, 2201 S. I-35 E. The Sundown Collaborative Theatre program features 15 short works by and for the queer community, with nightly lineups changing; tickets are $14 to $20, and performances continue this weekend and next.
At Golden Triangle Mall, 2201 S. I-35E, the Otaku Food Festival: Texas One Piece Tour runs Saturday and Sunday with One Piece-themed art, food, performances and other programming.
Saturday’s schedule begins with Stride N’ Thrive at North Lakes Park, 4401 N. I-35 E., from 7 to 11 a.m. The 5K and fun run mark National Health Center Week and raise money for Health Services of North Texas; registration is $15 for the fun run and $25 for the 5K.
