The Jane Nelson Institute for Women's Leadership at Texas Woman's University has chosen Bobbie Mitchell, the commissioner for Denton County Precinct 3, to receive its 2026 Distinguished Public Service Award. The honor acknowledges her more than thirty years of leadership and service in government roles.
The award will be formally presented during the Leading the Lone Star State: Texas Women in Public Service Summit on September 25 at the Denton Convention Center. Shannon Mantaro, executive director and chief officer for the institute, stated that the recognition highlights the significant impact women have on shaping government and society.
Mitchell’s career in public office began before her 2000 election to the Commissioners Court. She previously served as mayor of Lewisville and held a seat on the Lewisville City Council. Her experience later expanded to include leadership positions within the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Conference of Urban Counties.
Her work has focused on advancing regional cooperation regarding transportation, emergency preparedness, and public safety. In her current capacity as county commissioner, she continues to hold regional leadership roles while advocating for the communities in her jurisdiction.
Mantaro noted that the award aims to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in public service. The summit itself is designed to unite women working in public administration, elected office, and government through sessions, keynotes, and networking opportunities.
