In previous preseason games, the starters had limited exposure, with quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back Woody Marks each playing only one drive against the Las Vegas Raiders. The starting offensive line has managed just two drives across both games, and notably, the starting defense has yet to take the field this preseason.
Ryans explained that the choice to rest starters is a strategic one, as the team is pleased with their performance during the joint practice. Injuries to key players, such as wide receiver Jayden Higgins and offensive tackle Braden Smith, may have also contributed to this decision to minimize injury risks.
As the Texans gear up for the regular season, backups, including quarterbacks Davis Mills and Brett Rypien, are expected to take the field against the Panthers, providing a final chance for players to demonstrate their abilities before the team finalizes its 53-man roster.
The Texans will kick off their season against the Buffalo Bills at Reliant Stadium, where starters are anticipated to make their first appearance of the season.
