Southern Methodist University (SMU) has announced the appointment of Derek Gossler as its Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's strategy to boost its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by prioritizing revenue generation, which is essential in the landscape of college athletics.
Gossler arrives with over 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticketing, and commercial strategy. His most recent position was at the University of Wyoming, where he served as Senior Associate A.D. for Development and Chief Revenue Officer. There, he notably increased cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and set records in premium seating and ticket revenue.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler contributed to the U.S. Air Force Academy, achieving five years of record fundraising. He also played a significant role at Arizona State University, helping to raise $86 million during a major fundraising campaign and assisting in the launch of the men's hockey program through substantial donor support.
Gossler's diverse experience in various athletic departments positions him to effectively address SMU's revenue needs as it competes in a major market. His focus will be on maximizing revenue through innovative strategies and fostering relationships with fans, supporters, and corporate partners. As SMU continues to enhance its athletic programs nationally, Gossler's hiring underscores a commitment to revenue generation during the Mustangs' transition into the ACC.
Further details regarding his specific plans for SMU's athletic revenue initiatives have yet to be revealed.
