As the Dallas Cowboys near the end of their training camp in Oxnard, the focus is on evaluating their offensive line depth, particularly the backup center position. Quarterback Dak Prescott leads a promising offense that includes standout wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
Originally, veteran Matt Hennessy was expected to serve as the backup center, but he has been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury, creating a significant gap in the team's depth. T.J. Bass has emerged as the primary candidate for the backup center role, despite his inexperience at that position.
Bass, who has started in 10 games over the past three seasons, was given a second-round tender in the offseason, ensuring a salary of $5.76 million.
In the first preseason game, Bass started at center for two series before Nick Leverett took over. Leverett, who has experience at guard and one career start at center, has been working extensively in practice as the backup center. The Cowboys are considering Leverett as a potential option, which could allow Bass to return to his preferred position at guard.
With the need for a reliable backup center critical, the coming weeks will be pivotal for both players as the team finalizes its offensive line strategy.
