The Dallas Cowboys are currently evaluating their quarterback lineup as the NFL roster cut deadline approaches on August 30. A competitive battle is underway for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton both vying for the role during the preseason.

Reports suggest that Howell, who has played 18 of his 20 NFL games as a starter, might be let go in favor of Milton, who has reportedly excelled in recent preseason performances. Analyst Ben Grimaldi from USA Today notes that Howell had an early advantage, but Milton's strong showings have changed the competition's landscape.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer mentioned that Howell had been slightly ahead in the competition, but acknowledged Milton's notable improvements. He stated that the training camp competition is very close, with Howell possibly having a slight edge. The decision regarding whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster complicates matters, as retaining three could require cuts at other positions where depth is needed.

Howell's contract, which guarantees $2.5 million for the year, means that the team would still face that expense if he is released.

As training camp comes to a close, the Cowboys will need to finalize their decision, potentially influenced by their upcoming preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints. While some analysts believe both Howell and Milton may be retained, the competition remains fierce, and the final choice is still uncertain.
