The Texas Department of Transportation has issued a warning for drivers planning to travel through Denton County during the Labor Day holiday. According to a recent press release, officials anticipate that congestion will be most severe on Friday before easing into the rest of the weekend.
TxDOT projects that heavy traffic will affect the I-35 corridor between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday. This stretch includes areas in Dallas, Denton, Waco, and Austin.
From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the same day, the agency expects the heavy congestion to extend further, covering the route from San Antonio through Temple, Waco, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, reaching up to Denton and Gainesville.
For the remainder of the holiday period, traffic conditions are expected to moderate. TxDOT forecasts moderate levels of congestion from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. These moderate conditions will impact the I-35 corridor in Denton, the DFW Metroplex, and the route south toward Austin and San Antonio.
Construction activity is ongoing at the I-35W and I-35E merge point in Denton. However, TxDOT stated that no road closures are planned for the holiday weekend. Additionally, a recent project completion along I-35W at FM 407 has provided some relief for commuters passing under the overpass.
