Denton Animal Services reported taking custody of 191 turtles and tortoises after a local FedEx Office identified an unusual attempted shipment. The shelter stated that the FedEx location contacted them upon discovering the package, prompting an immediate response to secure the animals.
Upon receiving the call, shelter staff took the reptiles into custody and provided temporary housing. During this process, they notified the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which subsequently opened an investigation into the matter. The shelter acknowledged the federal agency's rapid support and partnership in handling the situation.
Following the initial intake, the animals were transferred to the Dallas Zoo, where they are currently housed. The shelter noted that the transfer ensured the animals were in a safe environment while the investigation proceeded.
In a social media post, the shelter described the event as "business not as usual" and highlighted the incident as an example of how their team supports the community. They expressed gratitude for the strong partnerships with animal welfare colleagues that allow for coordinated responses in unique situations.
