Residents in several southern Denton County communities are being reminded that fireworks are prohibited within their city boundaries. Argyle, Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Denton, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Lantana, and Northlake all maintain ordinances that ban the possession and discharge of fireworks. While vendors located just outside municipal lines may sell these items, local laws strictly forbid residents from bringing them into town or setting them off.
Penalties for violating these bans vary by jurisdiction. A message from the Lantana Community Association indicated that fines can reach $1,000 per occurrence. Other municipalities, such as Flower Mound, have noted that violations could result in fines up to $2,000. Flower Mound officials specifically clarified that sparklers are included in the prohibition and urged residents to report illegal use by contacting the non-emergency police line.
Local officials cite public safety and welfare as the primary reasons for the restrictions. The Lantana Community Association stated that the bans aim to reduce distress for residents with anxiety or panic disorders, as well as veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The loud noises associated with fireworks also contribute to pets going missing during major holidays. Additionally, dry and windy conditions typical of July increase the risk of fires starting from stray fireworks.
There are limited exceptions to the rules. Small ground-level poppers are generally permitted within city limits. In unincorporated Denton County, discharging fireworks on private property is legal provided the property owner gives permission. Residents seeking legal alternatives can attend professional displays scheduled for the upcoming holiday. Roanoke is hosting festivities on July 3 with fireworks scheduled after 9:15 p.m. Flower Mound will hold Independence Fest on Saturday with a show at 9:50 p.m. at Bakersfield Park, weather permitting. Denton and Grapevine will also host city-wide celebrations with fireworks set for 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
