Shoppers at the Denton Flea Market gather on Sunday afternoons for a mix of retail therapy and entertainment. The venue, located at 4200 E. University Drive on the east side of Denton, features up to 250 vendors selling items ranging from clothing and plants to traditional foods like elote and pupusas.
The market is also known as La Pulga de Denton by Spanish speakers. It serves as a weekly celebration of Latino culture, drawing families who set up lawn chairs around an amateur lucha libre ring. Local masked wrestlers perform bi-weekly matches in the sweltering North Texas heat, accompanied by ranchera music and the sounds of roosters from nearby pens.
Freddie Perez purchased the flea market in 2018 and has overseen significant expansion since taking over operations. He noted that the number of vendors grew from approximately 60 to between 220 and 250 after he implemented changes to how the business runs.
Vendors like Gerardo Esparza, who operates Elotes el Guero, use the market to sell grilled corn, tamales, and shaved ice. Esparza works as an equipment operator during the week but joins his family at the market on Sundays. He started the food business after deciding to make his own grilled corn instead of purchasing it in Dallas.
