Denton City Councilmember Jordan Villarreal has announced his resignation, effective September 1. The decision ends a brief tenure that began with his election in May.
Villarreal’s victory in May marked several historic firsts for the city. He became the youngest person ever elected to the Denton City Council, the first openly gay council member, and the first Latino representative in nearly twenty years.
In a statement posted to social media on Thursday, Villarreal cited ongoing personal health issues as the reason for his departure. He explained that the September 1 date was chosen to allow the city sufficient time to organize a special election. He noted that scheduling this election to coincide with the November midterm general election would help avoid additional costs for taxpayers.
Villarreal also outlined some of the legislative efforts he pursued during his short time in office. He highlighted work to secure a cost-of-living adjustment for retired firefighters and initiatives aimed at resisting gentrification and excessive development in the community.
He expressed gratitude to constituents for their support and trust, describing the role as an honor. Villarreal requested privacy during this period and stated he intends to discuss his decision further at the upcoming Denton City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
