Somewhere in a Northwest ISD classroom this week sits the U.S. 800-meter champion, starting his senior year.
Cooper Lutkenhaus went back to Northwest High School in Justin on Wednesday, the district's first day of school per its adopted calendar. The district serves Justin and stretches across southern Denton County, which has quietly become home to the most precocious middle-distance runner America has produced in decades.
The summer he's coming off
The 17-year-old won the U.S. outdoor title on July 26 in 1:43.48, beating runner-up Wes Ferguson by more than a second and closing his final 200 meters in 25.32. LetsRun called the margin the largest at a U.S. championships since 2014.
Paired with his indoor title, it completed a sweep of both national 800-meter championships in one season, a feat accomplished this year by a kid who cannot yet vote.
His summer also included the fastest outdoor 800 of 2026 and a Diamond League win over an Olympic silver medalist in Oslo. The under-18 world record was already his, set as a junior.
