A 19-year-old runner from Sanger has died following a vehicle collision Thursday night that also left two other students hospitalized. The crash occurred in Sanger, which is located approximately 11 miles north of Denton.
Sam Musgrave, a graduate of Sanger High School, was identified as one of the victims. According to his uncle, Evan Vasquez, Musgrave had recently completed basic training with the Texas Army National Guard and finished his first semester at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. He was also a recipient of a full athletic scholarship for track at that university.
The Sanger Independent School District confirmed the incident in a message to families, stating that all three students involved participated in cross-country running. The University of the Incarnate Word track and cross-country program issued a statement expressing grief over Musgrave's death.
Vasquez described Musgrave as a dedicated athlete who excelled in both cross-country and track while in high school. He noted that Musgrave was well-regarded in the community and had established strong friendships wherever he went.
Despite the support from the community and athletic programs, Musgrave’s family is currently seeking clarity regarding the circumstances of the accident. Vasquez stated that they have attempted to obtain information about the cause of the crash but have not yet received answers. He described the situation as one marked by grief and a lack of closure due to the limited information available.
