Denton Mayor Chris Watts has issued a message reflecting on his recent re-election, emphasizing the narrow margin of victory and the importance of civic engagement. In a column published on July 11, 2026, Watts noted that the final vote count differed by only 52 ballots, a result he described as a reminder that every individual vote influences the community's direction.
Watts expressed gratitude to residents who participated in the campaign process, citing attendance at neighborhood meetings, public forums, and interactions at local businesses. He stated that these engagements allowed him to hear diverse ideas and concerns from citizens across Denton. He also acknowledged the support of volunteers and those who cast ballots, attributing his ability to continue serving to their trust and encouragement.
The mayor framed the election as a process that reinforced the value of listening to differing viewpoints and working toward shared objectives. He outlined his intention to collaborate with newly elected city council members to promote civility, respect, transparency, and efficiency within city government operations.
Watts emphasized that maintaining public trust requires ensuring all residents feel included in civic discussions, even when disagreements arise on specific issues.
Watts highlighted the endorsements received from the Denton Police Officers Association and the Denton Firefighters Association. He praised first responders for prioritizing service and committed to providing them with the necessary support and resources to maintain safety standards in the community. He described the campaign as a journey that deepened his appreciation for the passion residents hold for Denton’s future.
