As the new semester begins, Collin College's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program is welcoming students eager to enter a field that is expanding significantly in North Texas. This initiative addresses the increasing need for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics, driven by the region's rapid population growth.

Greg Cox, the EMS program director, pointed out that local fire and emergency medical services leaders have identified a critical shortage of personnel, estimating the need for around 200 new hires each year. Graduates of the program often secure jobs quickly, typically with agencies in Collin County, where there is a high demand for their expertise.

Interest in pursuing EMS careers has surged following the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a waitlist for prospective students. Cox stressed the importance of practical training, where students engage in emergency response drills using mock ambulances and advanced medical mannequins. This hands-on approach prepares them for real-world challenges they will encounter in their careers.

Catelyn Barton, a recent high school graduate from Frisco, expressed her commitment to a career that positively impacts her community, viewing EMS as a viable alternative to a traditional four-year college education. Another student, Greyson Blanchard from Celina, emphasized the urgent need for first responders in his growing hometown, underscoring the importance of equipping individuals for these essential roles.

The curriculum covers a variety of emergency situations, ensuring students are well-prepared for their future in emergency services.

Frisco is about 18 miles east of Denton.
