Wood’s Defining Moment
James Wood provided the decisive offensive blow for the Washington Nationals, launching a four-run home run in the fifth inning to shift the momentum in a high-scoring affair against the Houston Astros. Wood’s blast, which traveled 446 feet to center field, scored Crews, Young, and Nuñez, pushing the Nationals’ lead to 12-6 in what would be the final margin of the game. The power display was a critical component in Washington’s 12-11 victory on Monday at Nationals Park.
Early Exchange and Astros Surge
The contest began with back-and-forth scoring in the first inning. Walker doubled to center to score Paredes, giving Houston an early 1-0 advantage. However, the Nationals responded immediately in the bottom half when Mead doubled to center to bring Wood home, tying the game at 1-1. The Astros regained the lead in the second inning when Altuve hit a three-run home run to left field, measuring 372 feet. The shot also drove in Shewmake and Matthews, making the score 4-1 in favor of Houston.
Washington answered in the third inning. Diaz homered to left (389 feet) to score Smith, cutting the deficit to 4-1 before the inning continued. García Jr. doubled to left to score Nuñez, and Mead singled to left to bring Wood home, making it 6-3. The Nationals then took the lead when Abrams homered to right (392 feet), scoring García Jr. and Mead to make it 6-6.
Houston Reclaims Lead
The Astros regained control in the fifth inning. Mead hit a solo home run to left center (404 feet) to make it 6-7. Millas hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Abrams, extending the lead to 6-8. The Nationals’ offense stalled until Wood’s grand slam in the same inning. After that, the Nationals held a 12-6 advantage.
