Safran Helicopter Engines and the American aircraft manufacturer Electra have finalized an agreement for the production of 250 TG600 turbogenerators. This firm order follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in 2023. The components will power the EL9 Ultra Short, a hybrid-electric aircraft designed for short takeoff and landing operations.

The EL9 Ultra Short is configured to carry nine passengers and two crew members. It utilizes the TG600 as the core of its hybrid-electric propulsion system, enabling a range of approximately 1,500 kilometers. Electra submitted the aircraft design to the Federal Aviation Administration for certification purposes.

The company anticipates the first flight of the EL9 will occur between late 2027 and early 2028, with commercial service expected to begin in 2030.

Testing of the turbogenerator has already commenced. In July, Safran Helicopter Engines conducted initial bench tests of the unit at its facility in Bordes, France. The TG600 was developed internally by Safran since 2023, utilizing the Arrano turboshaft engine as a base. It incorporates two GENeUS electric generators, which Safran Electrical and Power designed as the first certified electric motors for aviation.

Marc Allen, chief executive officer of Electra, stated that the agreement represents a decisive step for the company and the advancement of aerial mobility. He noted that the partnership with Safran is essential for bringing the EL9 Ultra Short to market and supports the broader adoption of direct aviation transport.

Cédric Goubet, president of Safran Helicopter Engines, described the deal as significant for establishing the company’s position in the emerging market for hybrid-electric propulsion.

The turbogenerator combines a gas turbine with electric generators and an innovative power regulation system. Safran officials indicated that the company has consistently prepared for the electrification of aviation through internal development and acquisitions. The firms estimate the potential market for such aircraft could range between 12,000 and 16,000 units.

Safran Electrical & Power employs about 571 people in Denton, according to local government records.
