The expansion of data centers in North Texas is generating significant demand for electricians and HVAC technicians, presenting new job opportunities for residents in Denton. With Dallas located about 35 miles southeast of Denton, the region is experiencing a surge in construction driven by the artificial intelligence boom.

According to a Texas Tribune analysis, at least 248 data centers are planned across Texas, with 86 in North Texas, leading to a substantial increase in electricity demand. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has indicated that data centers are responsible for most of the new electricity requests, projecting that statewide demand could reach 368 gigawatts by 2032.

The Texas Workforce Commission anticipates a need for nearly 3,000 additional electricians in the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central workforce regions by 2032, representing a 15% increase over 2026 levels. The labor shortage is also reflected nationally, with estimates suggesting a shortfall of up to 499,000 construction workers for data center projects. Consequently, wages for these positions have risen, with electricians in high-demand areas earning six-figure salaries.

As the construction industry grapples with an aging workforce and a lack of younger tradespeople, trade programs and apprenticeships are becoming increasingly attractive options for young North Texans, allowing them to earn while they train without incurring significant student debt.
